tire pressure sensors/wheel swap

I have an 05 Tahoe Z71, and have put on a set of 07 factory 20s off of an Avalanche. My tire shop thought they could get the Tahoe to read the sensors in the 20s, but to no avail. They tried to go in with the scanner, but no luck. I am not getting any "check tire pressure" reading on the dash so I am wondering if they disabled the TPS function when trying to reset it. My next move is to break the wheels down and move the sensors from the original 17s and install them in the 20s, and hope to get the readings back. Will the 05 sensors (hard stem) work in the 07 (soft stem) wheels? Anyone got any thoughts on what is going on here?
    Thanks!
