My son has a 2001 S-10.Has the 4-cyl engine with the automatic tranny.Says it is acting up on the highway. It will run fine then all of a sudden it will come out of overdrive and downshift and the only way he can get it to go back in overdrive is to stop and start over again.Does this 2 or 3 times when he is out on the highway.Fluid is full and clean.Any suggestions?

Depending on transmission type/model, It may be that the upshift/downshift spool valve is malfunctioning. Causes of this vary from old age and wear, (binding valve or low apply pressure), Intermittent electrical apply solenoid, to possibly a governor malfunction. You might also check the TV cable adjustment. This is potentially cured through adjustments repairs made by dropping the pan by a qualified technician familiar with your particular trans. I'd invest in correcting the problem now as it will only get worse to the point of failure.

    Good luck.
