I have been working on the 96 GMC suburban, K2500 4x4, 454. I've only had it a little over a week, and have been doing all the fluids, the rear end smelled very bad, the transfer looked ok, and the front has a recept from the prev owner last year. So this is why i think its the transmission.
when you give it gas it makes a grrrrr noise. if you put it in N the noise goes away in an instant. if you give it hard excel it does not make the noise. Also when you let off the gas it still makes the noise for about 3 sec. and than goes away. it comes back when you give it gas again. could this be the t converter. it made the noise the whole way back from texas where i bought it. it's very anoying. thanks for the help.

Have you taken it in for trouble codes? Not all tranny codes trip the S.E.S. light.

trans in the newer one are elec inside and are in the computer allowing the computer to control things. have the trouble codes checked. but first pull the dipstick out, smell the fluid on the dipstick, if you have burnt clutches in the trny it will smell like burnt almounds.
