I just did this and it turned out great

use some heavy duty oven cleaner to get the gold stuff off then just paint with your color of paint (I color matched and used automotive paint with my color code which is arrival blue), then 3 coats of clear. to put it back together I used some servo tape for RC cars
Edit: looks like darknesss painted the outside of his?

if you have an 04 or an emblem that is a shell (has a plastic piece that bolts to the grill behind the emblem it self) then you want to paint the inside of the shell not the outside by removing that gold sticker with the oven cleaner

I just painted the whole thing... on the 08 it is a 2 piece emblem... the black border and then the golf/clear plastic inner piece... which i could not get off... at the time i painted them... I got a rick chip in the paint so i tried to do it again which is when i realized it was a 2 piece... and in the process of tring to remove the inner piece... i broke it.. :( i currently just have the back/border piece... i will be replacing the whole thing with a billet bowtie in the near future...

If by "grill" you mean the mesh piece or do you mean the whole assembly like the mesh and the chrome surround? and when you say "stock black plastic" you mean like the stock black plastic BUMPER piece that rests between the grill and the chrome portion of the bumper?

    FYI..Pictures would help...

I used servo tape for remote controlled cars. The tape you should be able to find at any hobby store that sells RC vehicles and it hold the piece together extremely well. Its pretty much the same stuff that is already holding the 2 pieces together

should look something like this and brand does not matter

it comes in either a roll or strips like this
