What transmission do I have? 4l60 or a 700r

    i have a 1996 gmc 1500, with the 305 vortec, auto trans with overdrive. Is it a 4l60e or a 700r4? Please help. Cheers and thanks. Lid.

    Inside your Glove Box......is the RPO Code's for your truck.......To find out what Transmission you have.....your going to be looking for one of the Following RPO Codes,

    RPO Code....MD8 .....Is a....TRANSMISSION, AUTO 4 SPD, THM 700 R4

    RPO Code....
    M30,,.....Is a....TRANSMISSION, AUTO 4 SPD, HMD, 4L60E, ELECTRONIC

    And to see what your Truck came with from the Factory, Go to the Below Site and Enter your Trucks Vin # Number......it will show you everything your Truck came with.....From the Drive-train to what Color of interior,

    its a 4l60e the 700 and 4l60 are the same trans with some internal changes they started that in the early 90s. the 4l60 became the 4l60e in 93 94 when they added a electronic valve body hints the e

    cwbonetheyfz is correct, you should be able to see the connectons for the elect.

    True, there are elect connections on the 4L60E but there are also electrical connections on the 4L60 & the 700R4 for electric speedometer, & the lockup convertor solonoid, so 99Heartbeats (Mikes) explanation of the PRO codes is the best way to check, so as not to be confused by seeing wires going into your transmission.
