This is an electric shift truck

The front differential is engaging and disengaging - the motor runs and front drive shaft turns with the tires

The transfer case motor is audible.

I first tried engaging the truck in 4 hi while driving at low speed and got a grinding sound.

With the truck parked after selecting 4 hi the light flashes then stops and the 4 auto light comes on. I can press 4 auto and the light indicates engaged. I can press 4 low and the light (and sounds of transfer case shifting) indicates it is engaged. However with the front left tire off the ground and manually rotating the front drive shaft rotates with all other tires on the ground and the truck in park, so 4 low doesn't actually seem to be engaged.
