After 19 years, (assuming this is the first time the fan/water pump has been removed), that nut can be pretty tight. You will want to buy/borrow/make the right tool for holding the water pump shaft/fan still while leaning on the fan clutch nut.

Be sure to double and triple check whether you have right or left hand threads. If I remember correctly, my '98 is right hand threaded, but double check that. Some manufacturers put a statement on the fan shroud specifying the direction of the fan clutch thread. You don't want to waste a lot of time trying to turn the nut the wrong way.

I'm sure you can look in your Chilton's or Haynes manual for a torque spec (With registration, Autozone has a free electronic version of Chilton's on their website). I usually don't worry too much about the torque on the fan clutch nut. It is designed to "tighten" as the engine runs, so I just make sure it is tight enough that it is not going to rattle loose on the first few starts.

You can use a long screwdriver to pinch between 2 of the 4 bolts on the water pump, to keep it from spinning. Then take a wrench and tighten it around the big nut on the fan clutch. While using your left hand to hold the screwdriver in place, grab a hammer and give the wrench a good wack. Should come loose pretty easily, just be careful so the wrench dosnt come flying off

You can see what direction the nut tightens or losens by the direction the pully spins when the engine is running. To losen it, it should be the opposite way the pulley spins. That's so when its running it cant losen up.

According to the info I get at my work it spins counterclockwise so it should be a left hand thread.

Thanks all,

Looks like a new wrench for me! I don't have a 1 7/16". But I do have
that in a socket thus knowing what size it is by trying it on the new one.
Yep, reverse thread is correct. Think I'm going to dump the fluid, replace
the water pump-tensioner-pully and belt while I have it off. Been kinda a
problem with temp control in the past. Might as well take care of it all
While I have it opened up.. Belt should be cake with no fan or shroud
to interfere.

Belt goes in the underhood tool box for any EM that might accure.

Thanks again for the reply's

Better flush it before operating, a little barium down the tubes should work :). :). ;)

If your is like mine (1997-350=5.7 L) The fan shroud splits in half. I removed the top half of mine (fan Shroud), then broke the right hand 7/16 nuts loose, then I removed the belt. The fan and clutch will come off with out removing the water pump pulley, so you could do the fan clutch swop with out removing the belt, if you wanted to. I did this on mine a while back, when I replaced all of my water hoses. this made it a lot easer to get to the hoses in the front of the engine (E.G. the 5/8 hoses that come off of the water pump.)

So lefty tightie and righty loosie ? For the spindle nut. But the other bolts should be righty tightie lefty loosie?

Correct?

Sounds like a tale :)

To break them loose I use a hammer and chisel. Just a good smack in the proper direction and it will come loose no need to rent a pulley holding tool.
Thanks Pikey, yea I had a buddy told me the same thing, he said he uses his air chisel, about the same.
I shot it with PB today should be fine. Thanks again

On my 03 I played hell trying to get it off to change the water pump. I made a tool to hold the pulley and still could not get the damn thing off. My dad happened to call and I told him what I was doing. He told me to use the hammer and chisel. It broke loose immediately. I had spent 2 hours trying to get it off before that. Since then I have done probably 15 of them. The hammer and chisel trick works every time.

Good thing I have the K2500 and the plow is installed and working. Sounds like we might get another winter storm tomorrow night.
Wife asked if I could plow her a path to the highway, for her open houses, why sure, what's 5 miles to one of the
best trucks ever built! :) :) :) ;)

Back to the water pump!

Hey Chester................we're having a storm tonight as well, calling for a foot of snow before it's over, this on top of almost 2 feet last Tuesday. Then turning cold next week, I've had enough of this winter.

Yes Ray I agree I'm very sick of the weather also, by the sounds of it you're getting more of it than I am. I thought you guys always sent it down to us!
I hate endorsing things, but this kind weather really makes me appreciate Pandora radio. I just throw on the headset, A couple more logs in my double 55 gallon wood heater, and start cranking nuts on the water pump ;) sometimes makes you forget how cold it really is outside. No I never forget I hate winter! Hopefully you have a safe weekend Ray.

Thanks Chet, central US gets their "weather" from Canada, the east coast weather usually starts off Florida coast and moves north, picks up moisture, gets cold and dumps snow, or freezing rain.

We're hosting a lobster diner fund raiser for 150 ladies on Sat evening, we're all hoping the snow stops around mid-afternoon.
