This could be as expensive as a brand new control. The mode actuator is just above the accelerator pedal

You have two actuators behind the dash. One of them is the deflector door to direct air to the top or bottom, top and bottom or the center vents for AC. They use plastic gears. Usually it will begin its demise by making a loud, clock-like ticking. It can go on after you shut off the ignition. But if you did not hear this noise then it could have just broken too many teeth and the drive gear goes round and round. Or it just plain stopped working. If it is the actuator down low you may not have to remove the dash. If it is up higher, you are looking at a two day project to get the dash removed and get at it. The actuator is not that expensive and is a readily available replacement part.
