Got a question on a trailer brake issue. I think I need to run a new wire at this point but wanted to see if I've missed something. All lights work on the trailer just the trailer brakes don't.

I hook a trailer up and get a 'no connection' message on my trailer brake controller. (had a drawtite activator II on it that wasn't working to start with. I swapped it to a Prodigy P2 to rule out older hardware).

  • I've got power to the controller.
  • I get power to the red wire when i press the brake pedal.
  • I don't get power to the blue wire when I press the brake pedal; however it doesn't think a trailer is connected so that makes sense?
  • I do get power to the blue wire when I use the manual override on the controller.
  • With the controller connected to the harness and plugged in when I use the manual override on the controller all the brake lights come on for the truck.
  • I get no power at all to the pigtail on the rear of the truck. I even stripped a little bit of insulation off the blue wire and checked it before the plug and it's got nothing.

Are there any more junctions or fuses on that blue wire between the plug into the panel for the harness under the dash and the rear of the truck? Or at this point is it likely a break or pinch somewhere and I'm best off rerunning that wire?

There is also power getting past the connector under the fuse cover in the engine compartment. Checked both sides of the connector there; I'm assuming that's where I'll want to run a new wire from if that's the case?

Are you asking what’s it look like? It’ll have like 4 harnesses clipped into it, not sure on the location for you but it’ll be pretty clear once your under there, and it’s in a spot that sees a lot of crap getting sling into it by the tires

Did you install the P2 to solve the "No Trailer Connected" problem? Or has the P2 worked correctly in the past? Did you use the GM trailer brake pigtail or did you hard wire it?

The output on the blue wire is dependent on receiving a good voltage from the brake switch. Using the manual mode bypasses this and outputs voltage regardless of the brake switch. You need to check with a meter the red wire to the brake switch. Take a look at this resolution at etrailer.
