Are the running lights working with the headlights or parking lights on, but brake lights are not working? If so, check fuses. That's where I would start. I don't know what type of light switch would be on a console.

Well, you need to start at the brake light switch, one wire should have 12v with key off.

If no 12v check toward the fuses, if you have 12v press the brake and look for 12v through the switch.

Keep brake pressed and follow the 12v to the lights.

If you lose 12v along the way you blew a fuse

In addition to what Ray says, my 2002 Silverado diagram (possibly the same as your avalanche) shows the wire at the brake switch to be an orange wire that has constant 12Volts. I'm curious as to whether you have a CHMSL (center high mounted stop lamp) light? Does it come on with the brake pedal depressed?
