It's too bad when that kind of thing happens. I did have a similar issue but the mechanic (actually transmission repair tech) swapped parts to isolate, but never actually charged me for the parts or the labor, until he fixed the actual problem.
It was kind of an inconvenience, since it took a few weeks. I would drive it, and let him know what was happening. But he made it his mission, and since I didn't pay for extras I didn't mind.
