Bought this off the lot because it had most everything I wanted and I got a good deal on it. I knew when I bought it that it didn't have the Integrated Electronic Trailer Brake Controller which is a $200 factory option. But I thought, what the heck, I can have it added later. So then I'm reading the owner's manual where, much to my dismay, I find this:

The ITBC system is a factory-installed item. Out‐of‐factory installation of this system should not be attempted. GM is not responsible for warranty or performance of the system resulting from out‐of‐factory installation.

What is that all about? Is that just normal butt-covering or is there some basis in fact for this prohibition? Since, I assume, it's possible to add an aftermarket TBC, why would GM want to discourage people from adding the Real Deal as it comes from the factory? What I really don't understand is why GM outfits a truck for towing (such as with this year's "All Star Package") and then OMITS the non-retrofittable TBC. And the dealers don't have the presence of mind to order them for their stock properly equipped. They're not doing their customers any favors, that's for sure, since any aftermarket installation is going to cost a whole lot more than $200.

Has anyone here added a factory ITBC to a 2009-2011 Silverado successfully? And if not, what's a good substitute that offers similar features?

Have you had any luck looking into this problem, I just purchased a 2011 GMC Crew Cab and I had no idea that you could not add a TBC. I am currently arguing with the dealer who sold me the truck cause he failed to mention this fact even after I told him I would need a TBC installed. Let me know if you have any new info.

Thanks

I also just got a 2011 Silverado with a trailer package but no brake controller. I wish the factory option was installed, as I think it interacts with some of the other truck systems. I got a Tekonsha P3 off the internet $110 and installed it the other day. The kit comes complete with wiring harness, hardware and connectors. It took about half an hour to install. The truck has a 5 wire harness strapped under the dash near the steering post. 4 of the wires are used with the controller. You also have to hook up a wire found between the fuse block under the hood and the fender. The wire connects to a stud under the fuse cener cover. I left my old inertia type controller in my trade in truck, and am looking forwared to using this next generation type of controller with our new truck and our camper.
good luck... bill

I would imagine that you could, just ask the dealer all the info that way you don't void a warranty
