My starter has been acting up lately. I have tried the whole knocking method. It worked the first couple times. Now it’s having to cool down for hours before starting. I’m stranded on road. Any suggestions to get it started.

Unfortunately, hitting it or letting it cool down are the only methods I know to get you back on the road. :(

check the battery LOAD TESTING . clean the battery contacts. battery is on the fire wall battery in the summer over heats looses power. check the stater connections when you clean up the battery connections.
I have had a problem with what you had the battery I had an internal open .. I had 2 die hard battery that had the internal open ...intermittent ...

back in the old days when a person removed the heat shield on the starter motor the motor will loose torque bind up..
I do not like fire wall battery setup ...my old GM and my new Toyota has the battery in the front behind the grill...batteries last 7yrs.. new GM the batteries last 3-5yrs..................
