Got a little stuck on the beach yesterday...

Our 2008 suburban won’t engage 4wd. The low range works, but the front end still doesn’t lock in. When I turn the knob, it blinks for awhile, then I get a message to “service the 4wd”. There’s a little bit of clicking/grinding noise from the transfer case.

It seems like it might be an actuator or control motor? I’m somewhat mechanically inclined, and I’d like to see if I can do the work. And I really hope I don’t need a new transfer case, because that year seems to be spendy.

Any ideas?

There is an actuator on the front passenger side axle shaft. The shaft is 2 piece and the operated actuator locks the 2 halves together.
However, failure does not usually light a service message.
The good news is the service message comes with a code, you'll need a good code reader to read the 4x4 codes but knowing the code(s) will point us in the right direction.
