Hi everyone I recently purchased a 2005 silverado when i test drove it i hit the 4wd button and heard everything cycle and function as it should well now that it has snowed here in ohio i have found that it doesnt actually work. I have googled a ton of things over the past week and found nothing that is like my problem. the tcase motor moves and goes into 4hi and 4lo. the front axle actuator moves as well. I have also jacked up the front tires and tried to turn them . thats where i run into an issue. No matter if its in 2hi or 4hi or 4lo the drivers side tire will only spin a quarter turn then it acts like its locked up. The passenger side will spin free in 2wd and in 4hi it will spin and the drivers tire will spin the opposite direction but still only a quarter turn while the passenger spins all the way. has anyone ever seen this issue or have any ideas before i take it to the shop? i can usually fix things but this has me stumped. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks!

with no 4wd service light on it should be working. jack up the front end after you have driven the vehicle a short distance . both wheels off the ground . the front axle should not move much. if the front wheels move this can be the transfercase. check the fluid it should be a blue color. if black then the clutch is most likely worn out. the encoder motor in the transfer case connects the rear to front axle.

In 4wd with the rear on the ground, it will act as youu discribe; because 4x4 has connected the front axle to the rear and the rear will not turn because it is on the ground.
In 2wd, there should be some movement, but maybe not. There may be sufficient clutch resistance in the t-case to stop the turning.

But, you have proven that the front disconnect is working.

if the front wheel does not turn in 2WD when one wheel is OFF the ground then the front diff actuator motor may be stuck. remove this motor and inspect for damage. check that when draining the front diff there are NO metal SLIVERS/CHUNKS.. oil should be lt brown 80-90wt GL5.............

You are right, they are in the transfer case.
I'm assuming the reason the front wheels won't turn is because they are connected to the rear wheels/transmission.

OK everyone. . Took the truck to the shop today. . They tell me everything seems to be engaging just not getting power out of the T case. . If it's bad can I swap in a non auto 4x4 t case? . Or has anyone ever rebuilt one of the auto ones themselves?

hard to under stand you with this issue. when in 2wd the front axle is locked . now you have no power to the front axle from the transfercase.

well if that is the issue now then the clutch is burned up. the fluid should be black if the clutch is burned up. fluid should be blue.

the use of the wrong fluid will do it as well as operating in 4wd on solid dry pavement. expect to pay $1800 for this to be re-built. now this price will vary where you live.. 1200-2K range...
