I have seen some other postings about odometers not working on newer trucks and how the instrument cluster is all one unit. I am hoping that with mine being a little older the odometer can be fixed without having to replace the entire cluster. Any suggestions? I am hoping to try to fix it when I dig into the dash to change out a burnt out dash light.

I think you are correct in the instrument cluster being one piece. The best way to tell is to look at the transmission and see if you have a speedometer cable or a speedometer sensor. The cable-driven speedos are individually replaceable, but the speed sensor ones are part of the whole cluster and can't be individually replaced. I have a non-working trip meter because it's all 1 cluster.

Once you get the cluster out, you can remove the lens and the rear cover by removing the screws around the perimeter. My old '91 had the same problem and I found some broken plastic in the odometer, which caused it to quit. I was able to re-work it with some metal strapping and a small screw or two. As I recall, it was the retainer for the spring on the reset button and it went together pretty easily. I hope yours is just as easy.

I have the same problem with my '89 Chevy K2500. My speedometer works, but my odometer and trip odometer do not (I can't even reset the trip odometer). Because the speedo still works, I know that the problem is in the dash cluster, and need to remove it to have it looked at and fixed. Needless to say, I've been putting off taking out the dash cluster. But I would really like to know how far I've gone and what my fuel mileage has been like. Maybe later when my life isn't so busy.....

I have an 89' GMC C1500 just had my (already rebuilt) transmission rebuilt. 1st time was August (2016), then 2nd time was last week (02/20-02/24/2017) My speedometer hasn't worked since the original transmission was in it (pre-August 2016) the gear on the tail shaft is good, the gear box that connects the cable to the transmission is good, I do not know where to go from there. I tried checking the fuse, but apparently my truck doesn't have a fuse for the speedometer. I was told it could be a DRAC module truck or a PCM truck, a local GM Dealership Service told me it (should) be a PCM, being 89'. 94' and newer were DRAC Module. All the other gauges work except speedometer, odometer and tripometer. However, my Speedometer and odometer do move at times on their own, not sure how or why. Leads me to believe they work, its just something else that isn't working. Has anyone ever experienced this problem before?
