93 454 suburban power restriction?

Hi All, I'm a newbie to this forum. Thanks for taking my question! My Suburban is a 93 K2500, 454, TBI, auto, 116K miles. New plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, stock exhaust. Since I have owned it (about two years), it runs and starts fine, and is smooth. However, when "getting into" the throttle, it actually accelerates quicker if you only use abot half throttle (!). If you open the throttle up all the way, it feels like there is some sort of slight restriction; smooth running, but like something is holding it back. If you open the throttle gradually, you can feel a noticable drop in "pull" as you go past about half-throttle. I have never driven another TBI big-block; Are they all like that, or do I have a problem. Plus, for such a large motor, the truck seems a bit underpowered;again, are they all like that? Any suggestions are welcome.

The early 90's 454 motors were very underpowered at best. I don't have the numbers here in front of me, but some were rated as low as 200 hp! Now, for your part throttle question...is it the stock catalytic converter? If so, take it to a muffler shop and have them flow test the exhaust. You could have a restriction or clogged cat. Check your air filter too, make sure it is clean. Also, if you follow your air intake pipe off your air cleaner, you will see a large "can" just before it exits into the side fender well. Take this piece off and look inside. There is an insert in there shaped like an hourglass. Remove that.
