Hi all, first I should say, I don't post much at all but I love the site and all the info. I came across a 99 with 138,000 miles. The guy said the truck is "very clean and drives well." The first part scares me because I know there is a significant scratch in the tailgate and some rust in other area's. Neither of which I really care about but still. He has it posted on his website for 5,000 but he has it on craigslist for 4,500. KBB value is around 6 or so. So I have a couple questions, is it a good deal? Is there any major issues (cost wise, I don't mind a little work) with these trucks that I should watch out for?

I'm headed to look at it tomorrow evening. Let me know what you guys think!

Chris, without being able to view(Pictures)of the Truck and not knowing if it is a Reg or Ext Cab.....Short or Long Bed....2wd or 4wd and what other Features it has...its a Little Hard to say what the Truck is Worth??....

You would want to see Maintenance Records, which will give you some Idea on how the Truck has been Serviced/Cared for over the Years......Good luck.....:glasses:

X2 what Mike said. In addition since you said you have seen rust, you should look all along the bottom edges of the fenders, doors, & rocker panels looking for rust. If you see any sign of little bubbles in the paint in these areas, this is a sign of rusting from the inside out. The body drains get plugged up with dirt, & water, dirt, & mud sits in there all year & rusts the metal from the inside out, untill it finally comes through the paint. Also take a close look for any leaks, engine oil, coolant, fuel, trans fluid, rear axle). If you find any, use this as leverage to talk him down on the price.

Hey, guys thanks for the info. Here is some more info on the truck. From the ad "It is a Z71, extended cab, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, power driver's seat, window rain guards, chrome nerf running boards, bedliner, fog lights and more." However it says it is a "clean truck" yet there is rust (not bad) in 2 pictures and some scratches (some minor some deep) below the tailgate handle. But that's to be expected with a MN truck that is 12 years old... I can post a link to the ad if you guys want me too.

That's a nice list of adds so be sure they all work. Make a list of everything that doesn't, even if it's a single door lock, or a fog light flickering, & ca-ching $$ that's less money you offer him cuz anything wrong will cost you $$ to fix, even if you can do your own work.

Have you made a decision? If so what did you do? If it passed the road test and the guy selling it is not a slime ball, you might want to have a mechanic look it over for a second opinion. At 138K on the clock, with minimal maintenance (oil changes) the engine has a lot of life left in it. If everything looked legit, I would go for it!
