Brand new 2011 sierra 1500 5.3l ,Straight off the lot, If I turn temp down on a/c system I get a chocolate smell and visible smoke from vents no smell on full temp, does not mater if recirculate or outside air is on , fan speed does not affect. Took to local dealer and they say they checked and found everything ok has anybody had similar problem with a/c. P.S. I always thought this was caused by heater core leak but the dealer says its ok

Where are you at?? since the smell can be from assembly, and the "smoke" that you see is probably moisture from the air being cooled. That all depends on the humidity etc...

However if it is real smoke then it sounds like its time to find a dealer that will actually fix the problem.

I almost wonder if something didnt get dropped into the Vents before you picked it up (stranger things have happened) i would go to the parts store they sell a smell remover that you put down into the HVAC system. It wont hurt to try that, and it might just be something simple like that

Hope you didn't have a pissed off assembly worker who put something in the unit. Back in '90 I purchased a new IROC Camero. After a about a week I started getting a smell in the car. The dealer first cleaned the carpets, didn't help smeel got worse. Then they cleaned the seats, didn't help, then they cleaned the whole interier top to bottom. Still didn't help and smell got worse!! Chevy rep. checked when he was in and authorized to replace complete interior. When they removed the drivers side rear passenger side panel they found a worker had put a half a TUNA FISH sandwich in the quarter panel. Mother F'er!! They gave me free oil changed for two years.

I can also look into this issue further. In order to do more research, I will need some more specific information from you such as your name, address, phone number, the VIN for the vehicle, current mileage, and dealer name. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me either on the thread or via private message. Thank you.

cmcimino, yep its was really bad. Those assembly workers don't realize thats the kinda stuff that makes people switch manufacture brands, go to Toyota and Honda.

Found dog food in the heater/ac one time. Vehicle was garaged from day one, but the mice found out that the heater was a nice warm place to live & brought the familys dogs food with them & stored about 2 lbs of it in the heater vents :) The first thing the customer noticed was the smell

I don't know if it would help since the truck is new, but I have heard of moisture building up in the hvac system. You could turn on the heat to help evaporate it if it was moisture.
