I think that the 4.2 L inline 6 is one of the most powerful and best-built sixes that I have ever seen. It is very quiet and has tons of power at the same time. Awesome.

i have to agree with philly. I have the 4.2 and it's just about the tighest engine that i have ever seen.

first, its whisper quiet. you can't hear the thing while you're idiling. second, there's 275 horses in all that quiet.

it's just amazing, my hats off to the engineers who designed it.
I agree 100% I give the 4.2 inline six a big thumbs up.
I agree with you guys. I have owned two of these vehicles and I think the engine is just plain incredible as well. Plenty of power, but still decent gas mileage for such a heavy vehicle.
I think the 4.2L I-6 is very underrated. It's a phenom engine.
I agree. I'm glad they added the starter kill switch. During the first week I onwed it I couldn't believe that I could not hear the engine running. Such a shock for an engine with so much HP.
The starter kill feature is just a point of genius. Why didn't anyone else think of that before? I'd be surprised if we didn't see that on other vehicles in the future (or even now).

As for the 4.2 L i6. I'm tickled pink by it. I think it's one of the best engines that I've ever started up. Lots of HP with decent gas mileage for pushing around a good-sized SUV. Two thumbs up.
The 4.2L is sweet, I just wish they offered the 5.3 Gen III in the short Envoy/TB. The Denali is too rich for my blood.

Looks like GM has answered some of your prayers for 2006. The 5.3L will be available in both LS and LT trim levels in the SWB TB. Still only in the Denali for the Envoy.
Trailblazer engine options

That's awesome. Glad to hear it.
The car is so quiet, after having the radio on and parking the TB. I turned the radio off, got out of the TB, and went to work. I returned in the evening to find the headlights on. I hadn't taken the keys out and the TB was still running!!!! It's soooooo quiet I thought I turned it off.

You're lucky its still there when you got back.
That's not hard to believe. I often go out to start the car up to cool it off (don't want to put my boy in a 150 degree vehicle). When we got the boy ready and were ready to leave, my wife has yelled at me before becuase I didn't start the Trailblazer to cool it off.

She didn't hear it running, but it was nice and cool inside.
I agree with all you--the 4.2 is simply amazing. The experts agree too: for the 4th year in a row this engine has been voted as one of Ward's 10 Best Engines, and this is out of all mfgs. http://www.autoworld.com/apps/news/FullStory.asp?id=4322&frame=

Just today while my Envoy was idling in a parking lot I was thinking about how quietly it runs. A gentle breeze probably makes more noise! Plenty of power and good MPG too. Used to drive a '93 S10 Blazer before my '02 Envoy and was happy to see a lot of the trouble spots with the old S10 4.3 have been eliminated on the 4.2 (spark plug wires, EGR valve). I also read an article where the engineers kept some 4.2 engines running on a dyno well past the 150K durability test...they were still running strong at 300K when the mgmt asked they be shut down because the dynos were needed.

Yeah, this vortec technology is really pretty amazing. The new Colorado pickup's engine is based on the same design conecpt. They offer in inline 5 that can either gear up and provide the power of an inline 6 or the fuel eff. of a 4-cyl. Pretty cool.
Not so sound dumb but what exactly is a starter kill switch sounds pretty self explanatory? Also everyone seems to be talking about the 4.2IL V6 what about the V8 I would sure hate to pay more for something that’s not as good as the V6.
