Ball Joints on Bravada

My dad says his late model Bravada needs new ball joints. Dealer/local shops quoted him ~$100 for each part and a total job of $400-600 for both front units.

What's a reasonable price? Is this something I can do when he visits me next week? If so, what are the steps.

What year is the Bravada .......... what are the symptons experienced
............. steering problems, clunking sounds ?? I have a 2002
Envoy and have had steering problems forever. I'm wondering if
could be the ball joints.
