What is the Difference in the 3/4 ton and the ton I have the bigger trans and a 14 bolt rear end . However just was wanting to know why I have been told can't pull over 10.000 lbs looking to buy a Fifth wheel . It reads in door panel 8600lbs The rear on this truck has heavy duty springs and takes a lot to make her squat down . What is your thoughts ? I'm new to site so please help !!
Thank You

Maybe (for that year) it was duals on the rear that turned the 2500 into a 3500, rear end gear ratio is also a towing factor.
Remember, there is also a HD version of the 2500 which is rated higher; and, the addition of 4x4 lowers the towing capacity.

EDIT: as I think about it, the HD (heavy duty) may not have been available in 1999.

Penny sorry I started this and fell asleep, I am looking into this I did find the Hd version was a heavy build and could tow upwards of 18,000 but haven't yet found the c/k 2500 Silverado most likely because of the overlapping series, but I am still looking. I know for a fact you can tow what you need to, with a gooseneck installed. May need air assist in the back, but then should be good.

The Chevrolet Silverado and its mechanically identical cousin, the GMC Sierra is a series of full-size and heavy-duty pickup trucksmanufactured by General Motors and introduced in 1998 as the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K line. The Silverado name was taken from a trim level previously used on its predecessor, the Chevrolet C/K pickup trucks and Suburbans from 1975 through 1999. General Motors continues to offer a GMC-badged variant of the Chevrolet full-size pickup under the GMC Sierra name, first used in 1988 for its variant of the GMT400platform trucks

Here is the simple brake down, a half ton pick up means that it is rated to haul 1000 pounds in the bed of the truck, 3/4 ton 1500 pounds in the bed, and 1 ton 2000 pounds in the bed. All the manufactures like to confuse you and call the 1/2 ton a 1500, and a 3/4 ton a 2500, and a 1 ton a 3500, but these numbers are only a name sake.

Agreed Kenny , but it is the towing weight in question not hauling addressed separately. Look it up just bring up the spec sheet. I am just having a tough time matching her particular truck to spec. 1st year of second gen but yet overlapping models in production. I for one will be very interested in the 4l80e that she has and it's presentation to the engine.

So being on the farm, have never been concerned with tow limits, only (hell Chet, I think that's to much!) 10,000 a problem, or no? <Wisconsin coming out in me.

Thanks Kenny, overlapping models in 99 kinda tough, do you know what years the tranny's match as far as bell housing connections are concerned? For the 400 series?

Kenny, Ok, I have been told that the 96 was a strange duck! And could not use the previous year's trannies, if so what would the difference be? I guess I am wrong with your post, but would like to know where the difference could possibly be?

Thanks Kenny I do appreciate it, and I hate giving bad info out.
