Just drain the oil as thoroughly as you can and fill it. I use Mobil1 full synthetic AND Mobil1 filters but, your choice of brand/weight is all yours. I'm not gonna get into another argument about what's best 🤣 You may wanna take an oil sample, after a year, and send it in for analysis to see if you really need to change the oil, or just the filter.
Change to Synthetic Oil
I believe that I know the answer to my question before I ask for everyone’s opinion.
I am thinking of changing my 2003 Silverado 2500 6.0 to synthetic oil. If I change to synthetic oil do I need to clean the engine out in any way besides just draining and refilling, can I still use the ACDelco filters that I buy or do I need a special filter. The truck has around 114,000 miles on it. My theory is that I won’t have to change the oil every six months as I do now and I might help the engine last longer and save me time and money changing the oil once a year instead of twice a year.

I did my 2000 Silverado in April 2000 .. I changed it around the Mobil synthetic 5-30wt 10K miles odometer ..then 2001 now today is . the synthetic 5-30wt engine oil and they changed it around 7500 miles.. then the wix oil filters ,,,
I was the engine oil around 7500 miles and the oil stick is 1/3 of the QT...
I was the spark plugs 2003 plat plugs dropping it . then the iridium spark plugs ...the iridium is 100-120K miles ..
also the around 110K miles the O2 sensors replaced it ..my 5.3L is 19 MPG ..

With synthetic oil, you want a filter that lasts longer than a regular pleated paper one.Is there any reason I can’t use the ACDelco filters I buy from the dealership?
Mike, the synthetic oil filters are designed to work with synthetic oil, the have, as Peter said, longer life filter material and some will also have oil additives.
A lot of people do not like Fram filters, and I agree the cheap ones are cheap; but I use the Fram Ultra Synthetic, a great filter

Thanks for your input. I’ll have to read up on these filters and decide which one I want to use. I have plenty of time, I just changed the oil in the truck 1000 miles ago. My wife doesn’t put many miles on it in 6 months.
There are lots of good synthetic filters, pick one that's easily available.
I’ll have to check the availability in my area, I’ll use the information from this post to help me decide which filter to use. My wife told me she doesn’t care if I use the synthetic oil, but it has to be Castrol synthetic. It is all the truck has ever had in since the first oil change.
I see where you mention buying filters from the dealership. Now that we have the internet I would only buy from a dealership if I received some huge discount, even then I would check on prices. You can get everything you want, name brand, for a tiny fraction of what local people, especially dealers will charge you and have them delivered to your door. I have found that I can buy GM OME parts online for the same money that Auto Zone and Advance charge for foreign knock-off parts. Use the internet, you will save hundreds.

I don’t like to skimp on my oil and filters. I try to keep vehicles for at least 25 years. My two daily drivers are 2003, neither one burns oil. I have bought a few things from Rock Auto, even then I buy the better grade parts.
Any parts with the GM hologram are genuine. GM Parts Direct, Rock Auto and even Amazon sell genuine AC Delco and GM parts. You have to look at what you are getting. Many of the old GM part manufacturers are no longer in business so parts are made all over the world.You do realize that a lot of those online GM parts are cheap knock offs

I just put a front wheel bearing hub on my car, it was a rock auto part. I choose the platinum version of the bearing because I don’t like junk on my vehicles and I’m too old to do things twice.
