Gotta love those intermittent problems, and how they hide when the mechanic is listening.

It really does sound like a u-joint. Does it make the sound going from forward to reverse, and back to forward again?
Just because it's low mileage vehicle doesn't mean that the u-joints couldn't be bad.
When a part's time is up, then it's up! Could only have 2 miles on it, and still go bad.
I can’t agree with you more, when a defective part goes, it is it’s time.

We used to drive the brand new car off the assembly line only to have a brand new belt or hose go, among other things.
