06 Tahoe 4wd. The noise I hear varies and occurs at random. Mainly hear it when down shifts in stop and go traffic, also hear it when turning a corner and it down shifts. Some times its fairly loud, can be heard by someone not listening for it, and other times it is more subtle.

Sounds like metal to metal ping/clunk and I believe it is coming from the rear end. The best I can describe it is if you pop down on the accelerator and let off quickly the tranny down shifts then drops back to drive suddenly and the rear end/ u-joints slap. (Hard to get a Tahoe do do this because of the throttle surge deal) Kind of like an older manual shift truck when the engine would buck. Yeah - That kind of sound.

Anyway, I can drive for hours in stop and go and it won't make a sound, then it will happen three or four times in a row, then be gone again. Soooo I'm sure if I take it to the dealer they won't find anything wrong. I have 20K miles on her and figure I'll get the dealer to check it at the next oil change.

Anyone else having this problem or know what this could be?

Thanks,

MC

Can't say that it makes the noise when shifting in to drive. Never tried going back and forth. I'll give that a shot and if it happens that will be something I could show the dealer. I also figured if it is a bad u-joint or gear or whatever, it will only get worse, hopefully while still under warranty. Aggravates me though, pay $43K for a vehicle it should sound like a $43K vehicle not some Pinto or Yugo. 3yr/36K warranty but I believe the drive train is 100K right??
