Are you sure the distributor is not 180 degrees off? I have done this more times than I can count. Pull the #1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole and turn the engine until you feel air pushing your finger out and then stop at top dead center. Then make sure the rotor is pointing at #1 and not #6.

Man have I done that a few times. lol

Might also check the firing order one more time. I've messed that one up too. Although, it was usually accompanied by a twelve pack or more. lol

Backfiring is a sure sign of a timing issue. Check the distributor installation.

After I get home, I'll pull the air intake off and take some pictures of my engine for you. It should be pretty close.

allright..!! Gary.. that would be a big help. I know it would be a hassle... if you can, can you take a pictures with top air flow sensors and things off..?? you know it is under the plastic tubes..etc... by the way.. after I try to crank the engine, there is a whizzing sound .. from the back of the sub, sounds like it's coming from the fuel tank..the fuel pump..???? that goes on for about a minute or so.and that does not seem right.it's whizzing for too long...this could be the vaccum lines not connectted right..??. I don't remember it doing that.. when it was working properly.. is this something that would relate to my starting problem...???? anyone aware of this ..?? thanks in advance...

Here's a few pics of my engine. Sorry it's all dirty, but I haven't washed it in a while. These are not the greatest shots, but maybe they will help you. If not let me know exactly which lines you are confused about and we can go from there.

As far as the fuel pump running to long, your relay may be malfuntioning and keeping the pump on too long after you shut it off, it should only run a few seconds.

WOW..!!! THANKS.. GARY... THAT WAS A GREAT HELP...I had wring vaccum line going into the fuel pressure regulator.... that must have been a main mess up on my side... that may be the reason for the fuel pump going long... etc... I'll change that... ANOTHER BIG ISSUE; the one long and thin plastic vaccum line that crosses the engine... and goes to the passanger side of the firewall.....picture does explain alot... mine broke in four pieces, and can't make out the right hole... or even the right area....

Not exactly sure which one you are talking about here, can you post a picture?

Here's a picture of the small line where it goes into the firewall by the a/c dryer

YES... that is the one I was talking about... for the thin plastic one...crossing the engine.. other lines in question is.. on the second picture of the previous set of 4 pictures.. see the main big line going into the solenoid valve.... there is two more lines .. so that valve is taking total of three lines... I just can't make out where those supposed to go.. thanks... man.. that helps... jc..

There must have been a change from 97-99 because mine only has the big line going into it with an electrical connection on the top of it. Do you have a sticker on the fan shroud that might have a diagram to give you a clue as to what else should be there?

Sorry, I didn't realize you had amended your post. The hose under the one pictured goes to a pod about a foot or so in front of where the picture is.
