im looking for a muffler for my truck to get duals, and am looking for something thats not annoyingly loud, but not too quiet either, the stock exhaust on this truck is too quiet and driving me crazy. i was thinking about a magnaflow or a gibson but i dont know how loud either is, id even consider a flowmaster. does anyone have any suggestions?

Do a search, you'll find tons of info out there regarding various exhaust systems. But it's really all about personal preference man. I'd suggest skipping the search and take a trip to your local exhaust shop, see what they have, and go for it. Good luck!

gibson and dynomax are not very loud but you will still hear a difference. flowmaster 40 or super 44 series are great sounding exhausts and are pretty loud. i have edelbrock SDT on my truck and i am very happy with it, its a great sound, and is pretty loud too. my buddy has magnaflow on a 6.0 litre 2005 silverado and it sounds amazing and is loud so it cant be much different on a 5.3. its all preferance to what you want tho and price range

I have Duals with Magnaflow HFC's and Flowmasters and sounds great. Like you said not anoyingly loud, but not too qiet either. You can get a custom exhaust put on alot cheaper than you can buy a kit. You could add LT headers for what they want for a catback system. :glasses:

sounds good but if you really want it to sound like a race car though on LT headers with high flow cats and oh ya. i did that with my 05 gto i put on corsa cat back with slp Lt headers and high flow cats, quiet when just driving but when you get on it race car city.

Gibson will give you the power gains as a normal cat back would but its not very loud at all and costs more than some others

Gibson is excellent for performance but costly. If you are just looking for a louder/ deeper sound without going crazy, get the MagnaFlow. Flowmasters are really loud (but thats why it's on my truck!).

Welp - here's my first post!!

I'm in a similar boat same you raider. I've looked at Gibson, Flowmaster, Dynamax, Borla (way expensive), Corsa (WAAY expensive). I think the only plus to these systems is that some you can install yourself. I'm not sure, but the last time I checked any labor on a truck wasn't cheap. 20 yrs ago, you'd spend 200 bucks on a good set of duals (exhaust manifold back), so today I'm sure that's doubled if not tripled. I look at what the exhaust pipe is made of, the diameter of the pipe and how it exits. I think the Gibson is a good exhaust and they have a couple of really sharp side exit systems. I don't think you could go wrong.

I'm not a huge fan of duals out the back, I like the dual side exit (one side) or single side exit.

Let me know if you decide one way or the other and I'll do the same if I buy.

ive looked around, called the local exhaust shops and no one around here does gibson exhaust, so ive decided that im going to take my truck to the local shop that does mandrel bends and have a magnaflow put on. the shop told me that the magnaflow is quiet at idle and relatively quiet at highway speeds but they told me that once you step on it you will know that you have duals. i even called magnaflow before i made my decision.

Hey Raider,

Did you make up your mind? Just wondering what you think of the exhaust...

I put a volant cai on my truck. So far it's produced a check engine light and totally lost my initial take-off power. The power band is around 2K rpm throuhg 3 1/2 I would guess.

Let me know what you find about the exhaust. That's my next purchase as well.

Sounds good Raider!

I'd like to hear your impressions with your new exhaust. I think I'm going to go wtih the Gibson swept side single out the side. From speaking to the folks at Gibson, it will give me what I'm looking for better fuel economy and some growl when I'm on it, otherwise a more quiet rumble. I'm not 19 anymore and don't really care for the super loud exhaust. Hope yours is what you're looking for - give an update whenyou get it home!
plus its not that expensive. I talked to a local muffler shop and they would run duals with a FlowPro(??) exhaust for 225.00 including tips. But that's 2 1/4 pipe and I want 3", so I'm not going that route.

One thing that most people don't take into consideration is the pipe size you get put on. A Flowmaster is a lot shorter than your stock muffler and needs a piece of pipe cut and welded to make up the difference. If you are looking mainly for sound and want some performance with it, I would recommend getting a 40 series Flowmaster with a smaller than stock piece of pipe, stock size pipes coming out to the back, and large tips. The smaller pipe will trap a lot of the sound through most of the RPM range and the big tips will really open it up at full throttle.
