I finally got to use my 95 5.7 ltr,(4L80E trans) suburban C2500 for towing. I tow an enclosed trailer approx 8000 pounds. From New York to Savannah, Georgia. On the way down I put it in 3rd gear and left it there. Got terrible mileage 7 MPG or so. towing at 55 to 60 mph. On the way back I used drive(the trailer was 4000 pounds lighter). Got almost 11 MPG towing at 65 mph. The tranny didn't downshift till it went below 50 mph or so.
It seems to me I'm not doing any harm to the tranny as long as it does'nt start shifting up and down.
Am I right?

The manual says not to tow in overdrive but I have on flat turain. Never found any problems.
The mileage is something you have to live with. Nothing that tows gets real good mileage. I never have checked the mileage when towing, found it not of that big a deal.

The Burb has been by far the best tow vehicle we have ever used and we have used full size pickups, full size vans, and even a compact pickup.
Glad to hear that you got your load safely down that stretch of road. Every manual that I have ever read says never to tow in D or OD, but stick to 3rd gear.
