I'm thinking of changing out the air intake on my 99 Silverado (5.3L) from the stock set up to an after market intake but I'm concerned with removing all the factory plumbing and having the check engine light come on because of the change. Has anyone done this sort of change? Did the check engine light come on? Did it improve power and milage?
Thanks

All of the aftermarket Cold Air Intake's....like K&N....Volant....Banks etc. come with New Tube's and mounting hardware they are for the most part a Direct Swap and Bolt-on........the one item that you will need from your Stock/Factory intake is the MAF Sensor.....which will mount up with all of the Aftermarket CAI's........you should have no problems with the check engine light as long as everything is installed Correctly.

As far as improving your Power and/or Fuel Mileage.....that will all depend on what other Performance you have??.....A CAI by itself will yield Small to No Gains re-guarding H.P./M.P.G......adding and installing.....Cat Back Exhaust(Flowmaster...Magnaflow) along with a Tune either Handheld or Custom......will give you your Best Bang for your $$$$$....

Thanks for the fast reply. I appreciate the information. I asked about the check engine light because my stock intake had a very small gap between the plastic sections after I replaced the water pump and the check engine light came almost immediatly. As soon as I found the space and closed it the light went out. Very touchy I thought. I didn't want that to happen with a new intake.
Everything on the truck is stock. I've never modified anything. It even has its original muffler. I'll probably replace it with a flowmaster when it wears out but not before. It's been tuned up to stock specs before because I couldn't justify the cost of a hand held modifier or custom tune. Maybe this next time....
Thanks

Your Welcome.....if you were to go with just a CAI and a Cat Back Exhaust.....those 2 Mods will help to Some degree, with improving Fuel mileage and H.P.....

Thanks.
Nice truck by the way. How did you manage the white above and below the front bumper? Mine is an ugly black textured plastic.

Thanks......the Top Bumper pad is a smooth one.....that are installed on the Tahoe's/Suburban's......and the lower Valance is a Aftermarket one which is also smooth....and then had them painted(Color Matched).

I'd like to do the same thing to mine. I've always like the monocolor look on vehicles. Mine is gold and I like that color but it would look much better with the areas above and below the bumpers the same as body color. I can't justify the cost of those changes but I'd sure love to do it.
