In my 03 Silverado my fuel gauge is about a 1/4 off. When I fill up it will sit at full until I'm about a quarter tank down. I know this because I have been resetting my gallons used everytime I fill up now. Just wonderong if this is an easy fix or an expensive one and just keep using my "gallons used" monitor.

the fuel sender is the problem. I would use a 2X4 and tap the bottom of the tank on the fwd bottom of the tank this is where it is mounted. replacing the fuel pump assy is required if it is still sticking. my fuel gauge is with the intermittent operation but when it reads the fuel level it is accurate. my gauge sender has been bad since the warranty ended back in 2003 with my 2000 Silverado......GM made all these senders wrong since they react to the alcohol fuel. should have been recall .... dealer will charge $800 to replace their defect...

mine does this too, i dont have the luxury of a gallons used meter in my cluster but i do track mileage with the trip meter. I am going to try hitting it with a 2x4 next chance I get.

I was hoping several months ago when I added techron to my fuel that it would've been detergent enough to wash away the congealed fuel or whatever it is that has clogged the sender.

A guy at autozone showed me the sending unit out of one of the assemblies and its a very simple design just a little metal wire arm about the gauge of a paperclip that lifts and lowers depending on how much fuel is in the tank (i think its connected to a float ball of some sort) and he said that the ethanol fuel gums it up and causes it to malfunction,

so in essence as Jcat described, since the ethanol fuel causes the sender to react you get a faulty reading at the instrument panel

I ran the techron in my truck cause the gauge was off. I was told if I ran a couple more bottles in it that I should fix it. There is a film that gets on the sending unit. The guys at my parts store swear by it. Said all the state police use it when there's are messed up and it fixes them.

well i've ran a whole bottle of techron about 3-4 months ago and now i've ran 16oz of MMO in my tank just last saturday so we'll see and hope for the best, also i'll try ANOTHER bottle of techron but the outlook doesnt look good. (i can tell that currently it has made no difference on my gas gauge issue)

if the tapping the tank and the cleaner does nothing then the sender is crap ..
