Ok I'm trying to fix my brothers 1997 GMC Suburban 2500 diesel for him. The truck will start and almost immediately after it starts it blows the fuse that runs from the alternator to the battery cable. He noticed that the original link was literally melted so he bought a new fuse link and re-installed it himself. My question is what/how many wires go to that alternator? He installed the alternator himself and I'm not sure on those trucks how many wires are supposed to be running to it he only has the one on the rear post.

Usualy there is only one wire that goes from the alt. to the battery. But when he replaced the alt. did he put the same amp alt. back in it? In some cases they make different amp alt for the same truck. And either one will fit the vehicle. If he put a higher amp alt into it that could cause the fuseable link to burn. If you took the alt off and brought it to autozone they can test it for you and make sure that its not defective. Follow all the wires that come out of the alt and make sure that there now grounding out somewhere or crossed over. There is probably a plug that goes in the back of the alt that as 1-4 wires in it. Check all those wires and make sure that the right alt is in it.

Good luck!
