I was looking at getting the hypertech max energy programmer for my 01 5.3L Burb. My question is, is it potentially dangerous (or if nothing else, would it be pointless) for the engine if I do it to a truck that's relatively unmodded? All I've done to it is drop in a K&N air filter. I'd like to get new exhaust from the headers on back and a cold air intake, but those are pretty pricey...so they'll have to wait for a while. In the meantime I was looking at getting the programmer to boost my fuel mileage.

Just the opposite. When it comes to performance, the Hypertech is one of the least aggressive handheld tuners for your vehicle. They're specifically designed for stock to near-stock vehicles.

In fact, if you did have any extensive mods beyond the basics, such as cat-back exhaust/intake, that's when the handheld wouldn't be the best route and you'd really want to look into a custom tune.

Of course, you can go with a custom tune with a stock vehicle and still get much better performance than a handheld. But for mileage, I know at least one other user on here has tested the Hypertech and got a noticable increase in MPG.

X2, My truck is completly stock performance wise and I saw great gains with the Hypertech.

I have the 5.3 and so far I added the VOLANT AIR INTAKE SYSTEM, which by the way woke my truck up out of it's sleep all on it's own... anyway, you are saying with the intake and full enhaust (headers back) that a programmer would NOT be a good idea? and for the lack of knowledge why?

Actually handheld programmers are fine for your basic boltons such as, headers, intake, exhaust etc. But I think you wanted to eventually put on a turbo, if that is the case and it is something to be done in the near future I'd recommend custom tuning. I like the handhelds because of 3 main reasons. Being able to adjust for new gears, Bigger Tires and much better MPG.

Yeah for now my $$$ situation is not going to get me the turbo in the near future. Although after seeing a video with a turbo'd Silverado I am dreaming big time. HA HA
