I'm curious as to how people do with the installation process for rear view cameras. What are your thoughts on installing your own rear view camera? Do you think it's something that should be taken to a shop to be professionally installed, or could the average individual with a little automotive knowledge handle the entire thing?

What kind of backup camera? I got one of those low end wireless cameras where the camera bolts to the license plate, and the monitor stand just glues to the dash board. Certainly something the "average individual with a little automotive knowledge" should be able to handle. Because it was wireless, the only wiring that was needed was getting power/ground to the camera, which was conveniently accessed through the trailer wiring harness.

I meant wired cameras that connect to the rear view mirror or dash. Has anyone undertaken this project? Also MrShorty, what is the quality of the picture on the wireless camera. Does it ever experience interference from other signals?

I get a good picture. I haven't ever seen intereference from other signals, though I don't think I've thoroughly tested it with multiple signals. When there has been a second signal available to the monitor, I think the camera signal was so much stronger that it wasn't a problem. (though I can also say that if I drive past someone's home/business who is using a wireless security camera on the same frequency, I can pick up their camera when my camera is off).

My monitor came with a stand that glued velcro to the dash, then the stand sticks to the velcro. Unless the monitor manufacturer came up with some overly complicated way to mount the monitor, mounting the monitor shouldn't be too difficult. It might be more a question of, "do I want to make holes in the dash/glue something to the dash/other permanent 'damage'". Mine had an optional cable that could turn it into a wired camera, but I was just too lazy to string the cable. Again, it shouldn't be "difficult," just tedious.

I had a friend who installed one of those backup cameras that attached to his license plate and it was stolen within a week. he went back to the shop and talked to the owner and the owner said that actually happens pretty often, little late to hear the news lol

Never thought about something like that. Sure would suck to spend money on a nice one then have someone come along and take.
