I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado and like many the speedometer is broken and I am past the mileage for the recall. I saw that I can get it repaired at Southern Electronics but they want $235 to fix it and I can buy a used one for $150 but someone told me I would have to take it to the dealership to get the Instrument Cluster programmed. Is this true or can I just install the new one myself and have it work properly without having to take it to the dealership?

Buying the used one, as the Mileage is stored in the Dash cluster, it would need to be Reprogrammed for the current mileage on your truck.......Most if Not all Dealers would not do the Re-program on a used Dash Cluster......and on installing the Dash Cluster, it is a very easy install, it takes all of 10mins.
Edit....I should also mention that you would Need/Buy a dash cluster from a 03" to 07" to work in your 03".......Have you thought about buying a Escalade/Denali Dash cluster??.......the reason I ask is that the Escalade/Denali Dash Cluster's have a Trans. Temp Gauge in the Cluster and as all the 99" and up Silverado's and Sierra's are All Ready Pre-Wired from the Factory for the Trans. Temp gauge other than having the Mileage Programmed......it would be a Plug-n-Play Mod/Upgrade.

Check on e-bay. My '03 Silverado had bad gages when I bought it last fall. I sent my cluster to a specialty shop for a complete rebuild, lifetime warranty. It only took a few days, and it cost less than $75 with shipping. It's the only way to go.

Seconded. I have been having problems with my gauges for almost 3 years. It would be a dream come true to get them fixed for less than $300.
