JET programmer worth the $$$?

Got a 99 Suburban two weeks ago and I love this ride!
I got it primarily for vacations and trips to the beach, that is ON the beach and I don't plan on ever getting stuck... Anyway, I was previously looking at suspension lift kits, but now leaning towards just a 3" body lift to fit these 31x12.5-16LT mud boggers: http://www.intercotire.com/site28.php. I want the speedo to be correct, and also want to mod the tranny shift points/fuel curves so I was thinking of reprogramming the VCM with this product: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=JET%2D14005&N=700+400201+4294891971+4294908216+4294907174+4294892651+115&autoview=sku . Anyone have experience with this JET programmer? What else do I need to consider when doing a body lift and adding larger tires? TIA

Hey, First off I don't think that you'll need to run a lift in order to fit 31" tires. You'll probly be able to run 33's with the 3" body lift if you want to. The mud boggers will be SUPER loud on roadtrips and/or Vactions and will wear very quickly. I've seen people getting 20K out of there boggers on the high end. Also with 12 inch wide tires you'll be flicking rocks and such all over the bottom half of your burban unless you get some fender flares. If you running stock rims with these tires, there probly only 7-7.5" in wide and the tires will wear unevenly causing a couple more problems. As far as the the Jet programmer is concerned I've heard good things. I have the Hypertech Max Energy and I love it. Great features and great MPG, HP gain.

I'm not trying to pursade you not to do this becuase I think it will A) look awesome B) it's what you want and C) it's none of my business :glasses:... Just trying to give you a couple of tips to help.

Good luck :great:

I thought for sure, I'd need a lift for those tires. But I do want to do this lift, so I will be going for 33's, but not the boggers... I was aware of the tire life issue. A guy a work also said to expect about 20K from those types. But I would not be happy with crap being slung onto the body of this Sub. It looks like it has new paint. So I think I'll be looking for not such a radical pattern. As for rims i'm looking at some cheapie all black Pacers 16x10's. I really appreciate your input m8:great:. It made me think. I must be considered a n00b since this is my first 4x4 "project", but that's why I joined this forum. B4 all the tires and lift though, I think I'm gonna invest in the JET programmer and a cheapie laptop and see what I can get out of this Sub b4 doing any serious mods. BTW I've read elsewhere 33's are the borderline when the tranny is gonna start having prob's. Should I be considering any mods to the diff? I've got the stock G80 limited slip/locker option.
With the limited slip gears your probling running 3.73's up front and in the back so you'll be fine for turning up to 33" Tires. With those gears your tranny will be fine, just make sure the jet programmer will compensate for the bigger tires to reset your speedometer. If your looking to do alot of highway driving, a good set of AT's would be great. But since you were considering the boggers I'm sure you want something pretty aggresive. Most major brands come in a 285/75/16 (about 33) and I've heard good things about BFG, Nitto and Toyo MT's.
Finally, Time to R&R

It's been quite awhile since I posted, only because I was tight on a budget and was replacing worn parts (ball joints, rotors, all fluids, etc.). I've put almost 10K miles on the truck and have taken it on several vacations, and am now confident enough in the vehicle to do some mods. With 3 payments left, I am looking to refinance, and get $2000 for some parts I've been eyeing for along time now, so I can ride on the beach here in NC. Short list, please comment if you see a problem. Ive mounted BFG LT285 75 16's (on the original rims I plan on keeping) and have estimated a 4" rear "block" lift for the leaf springs, and 1" rim spacers for the front. I'll be putting 1.5" rim spacers for the rear wheels to try and keep proper geometry. (I hate when the rear wheels look like they're inside compared to the front). Anyway here is my short list with links:

from Summitracing:
Headers: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/GIB-GP102/ (They're nickel/chrome plated for long life, worth paying for)

JET Programmer: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JET-14005/ (This programmer can program the ECU for tire size, and much, much more.)

4.5" Rear Leaf Spring Lifting Blocks: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SJA-BUK4564/ (I measured 4" lift to keep it even, but just in case an extra .5" can only help)

4"-6" Lift Rear Shocks: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KYB-565093/

So far this is about $1100+

from local shop:
Nitto Terra Grapplers LT285 75 16 (x5) ~$900 total

from Ebay:
1" Billet rim spacers for front (x2) ~$90 total
1.5"Billet rim spacers for rear (x2)~$90 total

A little over $2K... Am I missing anything ?

I have a JET programmer on my 07 classic. i like the programmer, i havent had any issues with it. hope this helps you a lil bit.

and yes it will let you choose your tire size
Heh, I look at this thread and laugh at myself... sorta. It's been years since I've started this topic, but I still have the Sub... and R&R in my posts? Almost made me think Rest and Relax...
But in my business it means Remove and Replace.

Some Removing and Replacing has been going on recently. I have finally upgraded the tires on the original rims to LT285 75 16 Firestone Destination A/T's. Adjusted the torsion bars for about a 2" lift in the front. I did buy the wheel spacers last year for the front and rear, and they have given no problems.

After installing the LT285 75 16 tires no interference problems at all. Ass end is sagging compared to the front, which I will correct with 3" lifting blocks. I would have preferred to use Add-A-Leafs to stiffen/raise the rear, but their spec's were not too convincing. After measuring, the rear should be about 1/2" higher than the front.

I was going for a modified-stock look, where the proportions where not too aggressive, and it looks good. I will post a pic when I get the rear 3" blocks.

Also, I have ordered the Gibson headers, but the more expensive ceramic coated stainless steel version. They are expensive, but I expect they will last much longer. They are almost a 1 month BackOrder from Summit, so I won't get them in till the end of Sep. The rest of the exhaust will remain stock stainless steel.

I want to order a Performance Accessories 3" Body Lift from Summit as a finishing touch, before I finally take 1st slow steps onto the beach.

Oh yeah. Staying true to the title, I still got my eyes on the Jet Programmer...
