Hi everyone! I am new here, and I have being reading a lot, but since I am honestly very VERY new to having a truck, I could use some advise!

I have a Chevy Silverado 2011 LTZ with 120000 miles on it. I bought it with about 118000 close to a year ago, I live in Iowa and the weather here is crazy lately, but yesterday was below 0- with blizzard conditions... please bare with me, the weather detail might be important.

I had to leave my house last nite, and after about 2 miles the "Low Oil Preassure" light came up, I am actually due for an oil change, scheduled for this Wednesday, but without knowing what to do and with my two little ones in the truck I stopped at the gas station, and put 4 of oil. turned the truck back on, drove about 5 miles, light came back on and now it said "Low oil pressure shut off engine" , so I did, checked the oil level, and it wasn't low, called my sister to come pick me up and then take the truck to the shop.... and my truck is there still... but when I drove the truck from the second gas station to the shop the only thing that came up was the check enginge light. No noises, truck runs normal, no oil leaks.... I have being reading a lot and it seems like this is a very common issue with this trucks ! (the "Low pressure shut off engine") and I have seen everything from "weather so cold your oil is to thick" to oil pressure sensors" to engine shut completely"

Any insight would be so appreciated, I would like to be informed once I have to make decisions on how to proceed.....

the oil you require is the synthetic dexos GM approved 5-30wt oil.. this could be 0-30wt so check with the dealership to be sure or just look at the fill cap.

I would not use any cheaper conventional type oils.

if your engine has some sludge water etc in the oil what happened to you with the cold temps is possible. with very low miles used , replace the oil every 12 months even if the engine has 1000 miles used in 12 months. also make sure the engine is hot when the oil is changed as that gets the goop out..

if it continues to run after the oil change with low oil pressures this may mean a major engine damage with these model year engines ..

Good morning! I actually got an oil change last nite, my mechanic wanted to be sure because the computer wasn't showing a code, but the light was on, and guess what? there was a deposit of oily gunk , he said I should not use cheap oil (I had no idea there was good or bad oil) , he ran the engine to be sure it was warm, changed the oil and the lights went away, I drove form shop to home and nothing, this morning from home to work, nothing, I think the cold weather and the cheap oil messed with me! Thank you again!!!!

just remember these engines require synthetic engine oil. the engine must be hot when replacing the oil. the time to change oil with low miles like less than 3,ooo miles would be in November once each year , just before cold winter weather arrives. short driving trips is very hard on the engine oil. water/moisture builds up. so every month or so run the vehicle for a hundred miles on a hywy...

good luck..
