Missing something! Help me identify it please.

Okay,
While getting my coolant issue all fixed up, turns out it was a hose coming loose, I was looking around under the hood and noticed I am missing a part. LEt me describe where it is.
Looking at the engine head on, on the right side where the oil refill cap is located. Now, just behind the (going toward the cabin) there is a "hole" where it looks like some type of cap or plug would go.
Does anyone have any guesses as to what may go there? Right now there is just this hole sitting there, while I am no expert on engines I am sure there should be something plugging this thing.
I am also getting a lot of hesitation or "missing" when I accelerate. When I get up to freeway speed (65+) it gets pretty bad. I am thinking it is just wires, plugs, etc... Do you think the hole I described earlier could have something to do with this?
I have checked all fluids and they are full. There are no leaks or anything of that sort.

Cap and wires are easy.
With the wires replace one wire at a time.
Cap and rotor is remove and replace. Almost impossible to put on wrong. The timing should be good but never hurts to check at tune-up time (after the wire,plugs, cap, and rotor change), should be timing specs on the underside of the hood and you'll need a timing light to do the check a tachometer is optional but helpful. The underhood sticker should tell you about removing a vacuum line and ensuring the idle RPM is somewhere around 750.
You might be able to get the Tach and Timing light from AutoZones tool loaner progam if you dont have them. They also include very explicit instructions for use.
