Did this job yesterday. It was hot and I was pretty cross by the time I was done, in part because my usually-reliable parts store screwed up a bunch of times requiring some extra trips.

You can replace the evaporator without disconnecting and removing the lines to the heater core but it takes a small ratchet and some creativity to get all the screws out.

Hardest part was getting the suction line off since the steel stud holding the aluminum line in place was corroded so badly I had to drill it out.
