Hello all, I have an interesting problem with my 1990 Silverado 1500.
Sometimes once the truck has been started, the temp gauge will "peg" over and the speedometer stops working. This is the first vehicle I have ever had instrument issues with and it only has 162k miles. However, the instrument cluster always works while the key is set to "on" but the truck is not running.
I have done some searching around and some people have had some luck with taking the cluster out and basically cleaning the connectors / checking wiring for issues.
I know its possible the cluster may just be downright bad, but usually if something is bad it wouldn't work at all so I'm hoping that a replacement cluster isn't needed.
Also, I do not want to mess with a dealership since they will most likely charge at least $500 to fix this, and I just don't have that kind of money to spare. I know that the place I usually take the truck to for repairs would cost much less, but they are way behind on what they are already working on and can't take a look at the truck anytime soon.
So I decided that I would try to remove the instrument panel myself and check it.
I was able to get the instrument panel loose, but it felt like something was still holding it in place. I think the string for the gear selector was in the way as well and I wasn't sure what to do about that. At that point I didn't know how to proceed so for right now its all back together.
If someone could tell me how to get the instrument cluster out once it is loose that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
