I just put in new brake pads a few days ago on the front of my suburban all seemed good. today i got home and the brakes were smoking, had my wife push on the brake pedal and to my surprise the outboard brake pad is not engaging the rotor. I have done front brakes before and nothing weird happened while doing these, what could be the issue??? HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

When you installed the pads did they go in easy, didn't hang up. Some inexpensive pads don't fit well. What brand pads did you use?

Thats a good point Bill about the slide pins. If you have to buy some high temp grease I found CRC has a lube for the brake pins that works well.

well I took them apart again and once I was able to get a better view the outboards are clamping, i got them from oreillys and where 25 bucks for the set so nothing special. I have just never seen brake pads smoke that badly before especially considering i have had them on a week already and have put on a few hundred miles too. my only though is it was in a very hilly part of town and I was in a hurry and maybe they just hadnt broke in for block to block hills and stops. the only other thing I can think of is that it is time for new calipers or to rebuild the current ones.

As Bill mentioned are the slide pins lubed?

I agree with everyone's comments about the sliders, but you should also check the surfaces on the calipers and steering knuckles where the calipers slide there, too. Take a wire brush and clean all those surfaces good. Trial fit the calipers with no pads to make sure they can move freely, but without any slop, which will make them clunky and noisy. YOu might be better off just to get some reman calipers for it. They are inexpensive and easy to replace, especially if your truck has a lot of miles on it.
Good Luck and God Bless
