So a bit of a backstory;

About 3 weeks ago, I was towing a trailer, and was at a stop light. I had been driving with an empty trailer for about 20 minutes (roughly 10 miles). When i went through the light, the truck stalled on me, but i had enough momentum to get it into a parking lot. After I cleared the code (using my ultra-gauge), it fired right back up, and I was able to make it home.

2 weeks ago I had to make a long drive (about 1 1/2 hours), and it did it to me again near the end of my trip. Once again, I cleared the code, and it fired right up. I drove around for a bit longer, and nothing happened. On my way back, it happened again. Got over to the side, cleared the code, and it fired right back up. Made it home again after that.

Now today, I went to pick up a friend for lunch. After about 30 minutes of driving, it happened again. Same routine. Cleared the code, fired back up, and continued on my way. Picked up my friend, drove only about 10 minutes and it died on me again. Same routine, and went on my way. Took it to a shop after lunch, they looked at it and said there was no code showing, but they couldnt do a transmission scan, apparently they didnt have the tool required. Fine, no biggie, I didnt get charged and left.

Dropped off my friend, headed home, and it happened again, and again, and again, for a total of 4 times. The last time i noticed my engine temp was higher then normal (the needle normally sits straight up), and the transmission was getting hotter then normal. Finally I made it home, pulled both the oil and trans dipsticks and checked them. Both were level-wise as well as cleanliness-wise. Coolant level was fine.

The code is P0601 - Control Module Read Only Memory (ROM). Ive read that this is a PCM -cheksum error, but that it is very uncommon for this make/model (more commonly found in Dodges)

the truck specs are:
08 silverado 1500 w/ 4.8L v8
2wd
54,000 miles

I've googled, yahoo'd, and binged my fingers to death, and no result. I need to figure out whats going on. I live in Tucson. It hit 108 degrees today. I really dont want to have to take my R1 to work every day. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't know what information and how much you were able to located, Regarding a Trouble Code...P0601.......hopefully this is not Information you have already have,

What does that mean?
Basically that means that there is an interal fault in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). There have been many reported PCM failures on Chrysler/Dodge products although it is possible for this to happen on any vehicle. In Dodge/Chrysler products, a P0601 Trouble Code means that a serial communication failed inside the computer at least 6 times.

Symptoms
Likely, no symptoms will be discernible to the driver, other than the illuminated Check Engine Light. Typically the engine runs fine, gauges work, etc.

Causes
A Code P0601.....In most cases means the PCM has gone bad. This is possibly due to a short-circuit inside the PCM. Or, if you disconnect the wires/connector from the PCM while the battery is still connected, that may also cause this code.

Possible Solutions
With a P0601 OBD II Trouble Code, the most common fix is to replace and reprogram the PCM. In a few cases the dealer may be able to reflash the PCM and get it working. But more than likely the PCM will need to be replaced and reprogrammed (we recommend you take it to a dealership for this).

The Good News
Is it *May* be covered under your emissions warranty. So even if you're out of bumper-to-bumper warranty or powertrain warranty, check your warranty guide or dealer to see if this is covered.
Other people have reported that they cleared the code only for it to return again and again. Keep in mind that most shops can replace the PCM but not all can program it.

yea, unfortunately i've seen all that. I understand that its most likely "PCM Failure," but! the guy at the shop i went to today told me that it was something to do with the transmission. Also, i dont understand why a PCM would cause my transmission and motor to heat up. I need/want definite answers before i start dumping what little money I have into this truck. What I might do is get a junkyard PCM, install it, get it to run constantly, and then go trade it in. I'd rather keep the truck because I do like it, but I have to do what i can afford

Edit......Also in reading the infor. I've looked at, there is no mention of the Transmission causing this trouble code???.....Sorry I can't help you out a more.....

Hey Mike, reading this part above, is it possible that an intermittant loose connection at the pcm could be causing this stalling & throw the code? Would a loose conn. at the pcm while he's driving be the same as the pcm thinking it had been unplugged while the battery was still connected. Could the op disconnect the batt. unplug the pcm, check & clean the contacts & try it?

Stephan......That's what I was thinking, also as I mentioned the truck being an 08" and with only 54K,

From the bottom of my above post,
The Good News,

...I would take the truck down the local G.M./Chevy Dealer.....and see what they say about this Trouble Code??

So I just rechecked this thread (ive been real busy lately). Ill check the PCM as soon as i can find it as well as clean out the connector. Anyone have a picture of where the PCM is?

In the meantime I emailed the folks over at PCM4LESS. They said I'd be looking at 375+shipping for a tuned PCM. I think this is the way I would go if i did need replaced.
