I have a 2004 4X4 Z71 which I bought last May. Mid-June we started hearing a popping sound when we turned. At first it was only when we turned left after slowing down just enough to turn into the neighborhood. Then it appeared on right turns as well. Since it is still under warranty (but barely at 33,500 miles) we took it in. The dealer said he installed shims to stop the noise. At first this seemed to work. Then about three weeks later the noise is back and this time it is worse. I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced a similar problem. I thought that maybe if I went to the dealer with a little more knowledge then maybe I could get it fixed before it is out of factory avalanche warranty. Thanks.

Take it back to the dealer and tell them you want the steering intermediate shaft replaced. This is a very, very common problem but they will not come out and say it. I had it replaced on my 2003 tahoe and it affects almost all 2000-2004 chevy trucks. I am almost positive this will fix your problem

You may also check to see if you have what is called CV joints on it, I had a chevy years ago that had CV joints and one of the boots cracked. After a few months the joint dried out and started to make a popping noice when I turned right, come to find out that was the problem. I replaced the boot and the CV joint Never had a problem after that.
If that's the case, and you don't fix it right away then it could freeze up and break apart, then it could cause an accident.

This is good advice since most 4x4 GM vehicles come with CV joints these days.
However they typically don't freeze up, so much as tear apart under the torque load. When they do come apart the shaft that stays in the front axle will continue to rotate but wildly, like swinging your arm in a big circle. Anything that comes in contact with it, is likely to be ruined, and need replacement.

Bottom line, if your vehicle's front end makes popping, clicking noises only when you turn don't wait to have it fixed.
