I have a 1977 C20 Camper Special 454 3.21 rear she has a bit of trouble pulling up hills. I was thinking of going with 410 or 411. its a 14 bolt. I hate to loose the mpg but with a 6K camper I need help. It is bone stock with no rust. Just turned 100K.

4.10 will give you more grunt, but you will suffer the MPG and top speed. I would look at something in the middle like 3.73 if it were mine. If you are going to be in hills and mountains most of the time and avoiding the interstate, then the 4.10 is probably the best choice. You probably have the TH400 trans, you may wat to look into a 4 speed trans. That'll give you a lower grunt, and a lower top speed rpm which should also raise your mpg if you choose taller gears.

yes it is the 400. Hills are the problem I'm not sure the 3.73 will get it done. Guess my problem now will be finding a 410 or 411 14 bolt rear end. Not sure the gear set will have room.
