Service Stabilitrak, Service Traction Control, and Reduced Engine Power -- anyone?

1219500 Views 458 Replies 159 Participants Last post by  Rmanuel
Driving to work this morning my 09 silverado 1500 stalled out twice. Both times the initial indication of "Stabiltrak disabled" came on, followed by "Service Stabilitrak" followed by "Service Traction Control" lastly followed by "Reduce Engine Power" and eventually the engine stalled out leaving me with only manual steering and brakes.

Has anyone had this issue before? Truck only has 26,000 mi on it... still under warranty... but want to be as prepared for the dealer discussion as possible when I drop it off this evening (if I can make to the dealer).

Thanks all.
MJ

If you're touching the bulbs with bare hands the bulb will fail sooner than later. The bulb gets so hot a fingerprint will stress it enough to blow the bulb. I use Viva paper towels to handle the bulbs.

I could agree to that class action for the TC/ST and also for Damn headlights.... 2013 Silverado shouldn't go threw 11 sets oh headlight in 4 yrs
I always thoroughly clean bulbs with alcohol before installing to be sure that there are no finger prints from the factory. And then do not put any of your own on the bulb. Try to not let the bulb touch ANYTHING while it is being installed. Any kind of dirt on the bulb will concentrate heat and shorten its life.
If you have the little black box on fire wall on drivers side check connections there is cleaned mine with a small paper clip
Holy cow, Wayne. A friend of mine was over yesterday and believe it or not we were talking about headlight. What are the odds? He had mentioned he was having trouble finding the older glass headlights for one of his roadsters. Talk about the "old days". Anyway, I mentioned to him that my 2011 Silverado has never had to replace a headlight. Or any other light for that matter. I must be lucky? I've only had to replace the headlights on my 2005 Silverado once. Currently the 2005 has been coping a big attitude about not charging, but I think I've solved that problem for now.
I just purchased on '09 Silverado LTZ 5.3L Vortec FlexFuel. Drove fine test driving multiple times. Put a scanner on and showed O2 sensor, so replaced all 4. No check engine light, no problem. 2 days later going up a steep grade it starts misfiring/backfiring, hesitating/stalling, losing power/rpms. Check Engine light blinks and stabiltrack light comes on and off a few times then stays off, and CE light stays on. I rev to make it over mountain and it is spitting/sputtering/backfiring off and on until i make it up and coast down. Seems to ride fine on flat ground. Took it to Autozone and it read P0300, P0134, P0054, P0060, P0420. Basically clean Fuel Injectors was the remedy to them. Putting fuel system cleaner in today, and taking to mechanic tomorrow. Any help appreciated. Will post results/outcome. Thanks
Hi All... New forum member here, looking for help with a stabilitrak light and rough idle/no power (actually set misfire code for cyl. 3, then swapped coil pac and it's now showing "random misfires" but truck seems to run the same). Truck is a 2014 with 5.3L direct injection, so I'm thinking it's a different problem than this thread... but the symptoms seem identical. Truck was running fine, only had 18k miles on it, just started it up yesterday and it ran like crap.... looking for suggestions on where to start. I'm a pretty experienced DIY'er, but my scan tools are all pretty outdated, so I joined this forum actually for suggestions on diagnostic tools. But then I found this thread and thought perhaps this was a common problem. Anyway, sorry if this isn't the right thread... like I said, new guy just trying to get upto speed on this forum. Thanks.

BTW, I would like to PM Chevy customer service with my VIN, etc..... but can't even figure out how to that right now... lol... I'm pretty lame I guess.

Hello forum friends, I'm new here and to forums in general.
My 08 6.2 yukon x/l has recently been giving the service stability display and going into limp mode. I'm guessing by this thread that I should replace/check electric connections at tb tps and possibly under drivers door sill. And possibly replace the TV. Any info would be appreciated. Also check engine light stayed on this time with these codes p0442, p2270, p0700, u0073, u0100 thank you

Go to dealership and tell them it is the same relay GM has warrantied repeatedly with free replacement. They look it up and they should fix it for free. That was my 2011 Silverado 1500 same diagnostic and I was out of there in 30 minutes with no bill. Good luck.

I agree with Tim, as I said in the other threads, GM has an extended warranty on this piece. It's part of the throttle body, the sensor that monitors the position of the gas pedal.

I have a 2011 Chevy Tahoe 4WD.It has happen twice but both times it was well below freezing. Both were short trips without engine really warming up.After I came back 15 min later it hard to start and had all the conditions you describe. The 1st time it was under warranty but the dealer said nothing wrong and no fault codes.2th time out of warranty of course so I limped home and parked it.Put in some gasoline antifreeze and waited a couple of hours and it started up no problem. Also after the 3th startup the engine service light went out which I believe is normal when faults are corrected.
Check your positive connection to either your battery or to the fuse box, or check your wire to your alternator. Mine was destroyed. I swapped that out with just a 24in battery wire, and fingers crossed, I wont have anymore problems. It went from throwing 7 codes, to only throwing 1. Good luck and hopefully it helps the next person out. Just an FYI, the dheads at my local tires plus tried to screw me over and tell me it would be a $3200 fix. I told them no thank you. After driving on it for a few months, I decided to go back and look it over a little more, bc the problem was getting worse, which is when I found that wire. Check the wire from alternator to fuse box, and good luck.
An update: Took the truck into the dealer. Turns out some '09s (and '07s, '08s) were made with faulty air intakes. The plastic on these intakes can wear down over time and fracture. The fracturing causes small plastic particles to enter the engine, and as a defense mechanism the computer shuts down stabilitrak, reduces engine power, etc to prevent damage. Just in case anyone was wondering.
Thank you for the heads up. Is your engine now damaged because of this?
My 2008 chevy tahoe I just literally bought August 27,2021 had service traction control, service stabilitrak and engine power reduced light amd engine light just came on. The dealership i bought it from tool it to there mechanic. They are saying the throttle needs to be replaced?
It's probably the throttle position sensor that they are replacing.

Around the middle of this thread there is reference to a GM TSB, it talks about GM changing the TPS for free and giving a 10 year warranty.

I think I responded to your other comment in a different thread.
Even for a 2008? How do I find out if GM will replace it?
I will make sure to ask also if it is the throttle sensor that they are replacing.
Would that sensor resolve all those issues with the rpm, jack hammering sound and how it runs when input my foot on the gas and what feels like trouble changing, shifting gears or is there still a possibility of corrosion? That they just don't want to deal with it or faulty wires?

I have tried to share the videos but it won't let me here for some reason.
None of those problems are electrical corrosion problems.
Will it cure all of those problems? I think it will cure most of them, not sure about the "jack hammering sound".
2 weeks and 4 shop trips later, I finally (fingers crossed) have resolution on this issue.

-- FYI: My shop said GM for the past 6 months has been getting a number of inquiries as to the nature of the problem I had. There is currently a bulletin out (not a recall), so if you have these issues I'd recommend mentioning this as a possible problem --

The Situation (along with a fist pump):
- Driving along normally, not doing anything out of the ordinary, when the engine begins with a short RPM increase, followed by a quick decrease of about 1,000 RPMs, followed by the following warning indications in this order in about 3 second intervals: Stabilitrak Disabled, Traction Control Disabled, Service Stabilitrak, Reduced Engine Power. The engine then stalls out

The Shop Trips:
1) Replace Throttle Body Sensors: Shop tech advises the codes are due to uneven airflow in the engine compartment. GM recommends a swap out of the throttle body sensors.

The same issue occurs less than 24 hours later

2) Replace Throttle Body Wiring Harness: Codes state the same problem with throttle body. GM recommends now replacing the wire harness. Step is taken by shop tech.

The same issue occurs less than 24 hours later

3) Replace vacuum hoses: Code states the same air flow problem. GM recommends replacing vacuum hoses. Step is taken by tech.

The same issue occurs less than 24 hour later

4) Replace throttle body: Code states same problems. Throttle body is ordered (but back ordered because of the demand for the part given the issue), comes in 3 days later and is replaced.

It's been 3 days and the issue hasn't happened again. I've heard it has the potential too though, and the next steps in the GM manual are replacing the Alternator, then the battery.
