Shifting from Park To Drive

Good morniing.
I'm a new kid on the block and own a 1998 Chevy 1500 Silverado, with just over 200,000 mi. lately I've been having trouble getting the shifter to move from the Park Position into Drive or any other gear. Most of the time I have to pump the beake and try to move the shifter at the same time. This can take up to 4 min. sometimes. I've tried shutting off the engine and starting over, but that doesn't help. Any suggestions?

donyms is right, it is probably an adjustment. There is a thing called a brake interlock that keeps the tranny from accidentally going from P to D.
The foot brake must be applied before the shifter can move. Your lock is either broken, worn, or out of adjustment.
