I learned something new yesterday. My buddy has an 04 silverado crew cab. He has had that stupid steering clunk in the steering shaft for a while now and he was wanting me to help him fix it. I got online and found the part and we were about to order when I stumbled on a thread that said you could take the bolt out of the steering shaft right after it comes though the firewall and move the steering shaft in and out, the upper shaft.

By golly did it fix it! I was amazed! I figured it was worth a shot and would only take 5 minutes to do before we ordered the part.

I did a search on here and couldn't a post that said this so I figured I would start something. Hope this helps some people not waste money on a $70 part!

good to know. I know there is another 5 dollar fix sticky on the site with directions on adding a Zerk fitting and putting grease in there.

Glad you were able to fix it, at least for now. Sooner or later it will start clunking again. It's an easy fix to replace the intermediate shaft, and Rock Auto has it for $50.
Good Luck and God Bless
