I'm not sure if this has been asked before, and I apologize if it has. I need to replace the steering column in my '79 short wide 2wd. The problem is I'm a big guy, and I need the column to be about 6 inches shorter than it is to be comfortable, and I need it to be able to tilt. I looked at all the usual places, but I really don't want to come out of pocket 800 to 1,000 for a custom column. Is there a swap from a different model vehicle that will work in my truck, or any other low cost alternative?

I have not got a good answer for you but I relate to your situation. I would think you could find a viable a donor at the salvage yard. Getting one that is 6" shorter will be a real problem. Would a smaller wheel help?

I dont know of a direct bolt in column but a few years back a friend of mine had the same problem as you on his 76 Chevy.
He used a column from an early 80's Impala to cure the problem, its a couple inch's shorter and had similiar wiring.
If I remember the swap took the better part of a day, I dont know if he had to fab any special parts to make it work.
Unfortunately he passed away last year and his family sold the truck so getting more info on how it was done would be impossible.
