Bought my '97 K1500 Suburban bone stock last Fall w/ 139k miles on it and have spent about another $4200 on mods since then.
Biggest expense was a pro-built towing transmission for $2900, then some new 33x10.50x15 BFG ATs, built my own roof rack, did some motor tuning and cold-air intake, and other minor improvements.
I'm adding 2" rear lift blocks next week to level it out and will add a custom built front bumper and rock sliders this summer to round out the fabrication work.
That should have it a pretty capable back-country exploration and camping vehicle...
