Here's another newbie w/a starting problem similar to this. I'm an old carb guy and haven't had this TBI on a rig before. Mine does the same thing - just cranks and cranks and (usually) finally starts.

If I pour just a bit of gas into the throttle body it starts right up. There must be something that lets the fuel in to start but I sure haven't seen anything specific to that in the manual I looked at online.

No problems after it runs. No hesitation on hills or during acceleration.

What is my tired old brain missing here?????????????

Sounds like fuel, could be air. Something like that I start simple and work up. Change the air filter, fuel filter, etc.
