I recently bought a 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3 V8, Everything was fine up until the last couple of weeks. The truck wont start unless i press on the gas pedal as I turn the key, even then it still shuts off every once in a while while I'm idling whether at a stop light in drive, or in a parking lot in park. But the most embarassing part is getting it to start.

I have already replaced the fuel filter, and the EGR valve, and I cleaned out the throttle body. Does anyone else have any ideas, I'm just tried of spending money on new parts that aren't fixing the problem.

PLEASE HELP

Well to begin is the check engine light on? if so you need to get the codes checked. Also did you pull the throttle body off to clean it or just clean it on the motor>? since i have an incling that the Idle Air control valve has a malfunction, or the throttle postition sensor and or related wiring. So once you let us know the answere to these then we can go from there... Good luck! and congrats on the new truck 1999-2002 are my fav body style of that generation!

Check your fuel pressure regulator. Before you start the truck, after it has sat awhile, pull the vacuum line off of the regulator. If it has gasoline in it, your regulator is bad. It's about $50 for a new one at AutoZone. It's a common problem on this engine.

If this does turn out to be the problem, the reason it starts when you hold the key is because you are putting the ECM in "flood mode". It simulates the old days when a flooded carb'd engine needed the throttle open all of the way in order to start. In flood mode, it reduces or cuts the fuel from the injectors. It gets flooded from a bad regulator because the gas in the fuel rail is at 55 PSI pressure...when you shut the truck down, that seeps into the vacuum line, which goes into the intake, which goes into the cylinders.

Is your truck a drive by wire or does it have a cable from the throttle pedal to the throttle body? I have a later truck with the drive by wire and my throttle assembly developed a dead spot just off of idle. If I was making a u turn or something where I had a foot on the brake and a foot on the pedal it would invariably stall. With the truck stopped and your foot on the brake put very light pressure on the throttle and play with it. If you can make it die it is the throttle assy on the pedal.

Just adding information: My '00 Silverado is cabled. My '04 Suburban is drive-by-wire. I don't know where they changed over...

Did you ever figure out this problem? I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 5.3 engine. It originally had a evap code p0440 so i replaced the gas cap and the code went away. Now this is my issue when trying to start it. It will start about 8/10 times. But once a week, when i try to start It, it turns over but wont start unless i give some gas to to pedal?

Please help with any solution!

Well you didn't tell us that.

You made it sound like you had to open the throttle body butterfly before it would start.

Sorry about that, i edited the post. First time on this forum and forgot to include that.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

No prob, just more info will get us to the problem quicker.

It could be a fuel problem, the pressure may be draining down to zero.

The next time it won't start, don't touch the gas pedal, turn off the key, then turn it to the key on position. Let it sit like that for a couple of mins to let the fuel pressure reach maximum.
Then try to start. If it starts right away, you have a hole in a line, or a fuel pump that lets the gas flow back into the tank, or a leaking injector.

Sounds like a plan! Thanks, I'll keep the post updated if i find it to be the solution.
